A wide tidal river bordered by marsh grass and tall trees under a bright blue sky

Woods, marsh and the Connetquot

Great River is a quiet hamlet in the Town of Islip, between East Islip and Oakdale. The Connetquot River runs along its eastern side on the way to the Great South Bay, and Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park sits on Montauk Highway near the river. The county’s Timber Point golf course is near the bayfront, and the Great River station is on the LIRR Montauk Branch.

Properties here tend to be larger and more wooded than in the hamlets around it, and some homes sit along the river or near the marsh. That combination brings up three insurance questions we hear often from owners of this kind of home. Is the dwelling insured for what it would truly cost to rebuild? Is a basic flood policy big enough? And what happens when one of those tall trees comes down?

We work through each one. For flood insurance, NFIP limits may not reach the value of a larger home, so we look at excess and private options too. For homeowners insurance, we check the dwelling limit and how the policy handles fallen trees. And because Great River’s roads run through a lot of woods, we make sure your car insurance includes comprehensive coverage for animal strikes.

Who we help in Great River

Great River owners and drivers we help

Owners of larger riverfront homes

When a home is worth more than the NFIP building limit, excess or private flood coverage can fill the difference. We quote both and explain how they fit together.

Wooded lots with mature trees

Storms bring down limbs and whole trees. We review how your policy treats tree damage to the house, fences and other structures, and what it pays for removal.

Drivers on dark, wooded roads

Deer cross local roads at dawn and dusk. A collision with an animal is usually a comprehensive claim, so we check that your policy carries it.

Local knowledge

A hamlet that feels like the country

Many of Great River’s local roads are lined with tall trees and stay shaded and dim early and late in the day. Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway carry most through traffic, while local lanes lead toward the river, the arboretum and the bay.

Near the water, marsh and low ground can carry storm tides inland. Homes on higher wooded lots face less flood risk but more wind and tree exposure. Most properties here have a bit of both, which is why we look at the homeowners and flood policies together.

Questions

Great River insurance FAQ

Is NFIP flood coverage enough for a larger home in Great River?

It may not be. The NFIP limits residential coverage to $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents. If your home would cost more to rebuild, excess flood or a private flood policy can add coverage above those limits. We quote the options side by side.

Does car insurance cover hitting a deer?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage. A deer strike is usually handled under comprehensive rather than collision, so your comprehensive deductible applies. Without comprehensive, damage to your own car from an animal would not be covered.

If a tree falls on my house, is it covered?

Usually, yes. When a tree falls during a covered event such as a windstorm and damages your house, the homeowners policy generally pays for the repairs and a limited amount for removal. If a tree falls and hits nothing, removal coverage is often limited or not included. We can review the wording in your policy.
