A tree-lined parkway passing under a stone arch overpass on a sunny day

The parkways, the train and the South Shore bays

Nassau County is more densely built than most of Suffolk, with villages and hamlets set close together from Valley Stream to Massapequa. The Southern State and Northern State parkways run east to west, the Meadowbrook and Wantagh parkways run south toward the beaches, and the Long Island Expressway cuts through the middle. Many residents drive to an LIRR station and ride into the city, while others commute by car across county lines.

Location matters in the insurance conversation. Carriers rate a policy by where the car is garaged, so a move across the county line, or even across a few towns, can change a quote. Students at Hofstra University, Adelphi University and Nassau Community College add young drivers to the roads, and households from Hempstead to Hicksville add teens with new licenses every year.

The New York Automobile Insurance Plan is statewide, so Nassau drivers who are declined in the regular market have the same assigned-risk option as anyone in Suffolk. We check the carriers available to us first, then prepare the plan application if needed. Homeowners on the South Shore can also ask about flood insurance. Our office on Route 109 in West Babylon is a short drive from the Massapequa border, and phone, text and email work for nearly everything, so the county line is never a barrier.

Drivers we help in Nassau County

Nassau drivers who call us

College students at Hofstra, Adelphi and NCC

A first car at school raises the question of a parent’s policy or a new one. We price both and explain how the garaging address affects each.

Drivers moving between Nassau and Suffolk

Moving across the county line changes your garaging address, and that can change your premium. Tell us before you move so the policy stays accurate.

Parkway commuters

Hours on the Southern State, the Meadowbrook or the LIE add miles. We review your limits, including supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Drivers canceled for non-payment

A cancellation has the same effect in Hempstead as it does in Suffolk, and so does the fix. We work on new coverage through the voluntary market or the NYAIP.

Local knowledge

Getting around Nassau, from parkway to bay

Nassau’s parkways were built for commuting and beach trips, and they still carry both. The Wantagh and Meadowbrook parkways lead south to Jones Beach, while UBS Arena at Belmont Park in Elmont and the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale bring event traffic. Hempstead Turnpike and Sunrise Highway serve as main commercial roads across much of the county.

Nassau’s South Shore, including Freeport, Baldwin, Oceanside, Island Park, Long Beach and Massapequa, saw serious flooding during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Homeowners near the canals and bays there should look at flood coverage on its own, since a standard homeowners policy does not include it.

Questions

Nassau County insurance FAQ

Can you insure me if I live in Nassau County?

Yes. Suffolk is home, but we place auto, homeowners, flood and business coverage across Long Island and the rest of New York State. The assigned-risk plan is statewide too, so a Nassau address is not a problem. You can handle the whole process by phone, text and email.

Will my car insurance change if I move from Nassau to Suffolk?

It may. Carriers price policies partly on the ZIP code where the car is garaged, so the same driver and car can be quoted differently after a move in either direction. Tell us your new address before you move, and we will requote with the carriers available to us so there are no surprises.

Do I need flood insurance in Freeport or Massapequa?

If you have a federally backed mortgage on a home in a high-risk flood zone, your lender will require it. Even outside those zones, homes near the canals and bays can flood in a strong storm. We can quote NFIP and private flood coverage and explain how the two differ.
