A village of white colonial-style buildings beside a harbor in autumn

Students, staff and longtime North Shore families

Stony Brook is two places at once. There is the quiet village along the harbor and Route 25A, and there is Stony Brook University, which brings students, faculty and hospital staff onto local roads every day. Both groups need car insurance, but they rarely need the same kind.

For many students, a semester at Stony Brook is the first time they manage a policy on their own. Some stay on a parent’s policy. Others buy a used car, register it in their own name and learn that the car now needs coverage of its own. Students who arrive with a license from another state or country may have little driving history a New York carrier can use, which can shorten the list of insurers willing to write them. Families in Setauket, Old Field and the surrounding neighborhoods bring different questions, from adding a teen driver to insuring an older home.

We price it both ways, family policy or your own, and show you the difference. When the regular market says no, we place assigned-risk auto insurance through the New York Automobile Insurance Plan. Our office is in West Babylon, but Stony Brook clients rarely need to visit. Quotes, applications and insurance ID cards can all go back and forth by phone, text and email, so a student can sort it out between classes.

Who we help around campus and the village

First-time policyholders at the university

Students who buy a car while enrolled often need their own policy for the first time. We explain the coverages New York requires and what a lender will add on top.

Hospital and university shift workers

Early and late shifts mean driving Nicolls Road and Route 347 at odd hours. We make sure your listed commute and garaging address match how the car is really used.

Parents of a student driver

Should your student stay on the family policy or get one of their own? It depends on whose name the car is registered in and where it is kept. We quote both.

Drivers turned down after a ticket or accident

One bad stretch on the road can lead a carrier to decline a renewal. We look for another carrier first, then apply through the assigned-risk plan if needed.

Local knowledge

Roads and rhythms of the Three Village area

Most traffic in and out of Stony Brook runs on a handful of roads. Nicolls Road (County Road 97) connects the university with the Long Island Expressway and the South Shore. Route 347 carries shopping and commuter traffic toward Smithtown and Port Jefferson. Route 25A winds past the older villages near the harbor, and the LIRR Port Jefferson Branch stops at Stony Brook station, right beside campus.

Traffic here follows the academic calendar. Move-in weeks, exams and commencement fill the roads around campus, and summers are quieter. Wooded stretches across the North Shore also bring deer onto the road, especially at dawn and dusk in the fall, which is one reason we talk through physical damage coverage with every driver we insure.

  • Stony Brook University and its hospital bring thousands of commuters to the area each day
  • Port Jefferson Branch trains stop at Stony Brook station, next to campus
  • The garaging address on a policy should match where the car is actually kept
  • Deer are a year-round hazard on North Shore roads, and most common in the fall

Questions

Stony Brook insurance FAQ

Can a Stony Brook University student get their own car insurance?

Yes. A student with a valid license and a car registered in their name can buy a policy, even with little driving history. Some carriers will write a new driver and some will not. We compare the carriers available to us, and if none accept you, we can apply through the New York assigned-risk plan.

Does my car insurance cover hitting a deer on a North Shore road?

Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Liability pays for damage you cause to others, not damage to your own car. Most insurers handle a deer strike as a comprehensive claim, subject to your deductible. If your car is financed or leased, your lender probably requires comprehensive already. We can check your current policy for you.

Can I handle everything from campus?

Yes. We take your information by phone, text or email, send quotes the same way, and email your New York insurance ID cards once the policy is issued. You never have to make the trip to our West Babylon office.
