The basics

What the assigned-risk plan is, in plain English.

Every driver in New York needs liability insurance to register and drive a car. Insurance companies, though, can choose not to write a policy for drivers they consider too risky: someone with no history, a string of tickets, an accident, a suspension, or a past cancellation.

The New York Automobile Insurance Plan (NYAIP) exists so those drivers still have a way to get insured. Drivers who cannot find coverage in the regular market apply through the plan, and the plan assigns them to an insurance company that participates in it. That is where the name “assigned risk” comes from.

Applications go through a broker who works with the plan. That is the core of what we do at All Suffolk Brokerage. We gather your information, make sure the application is complete and accurate, submit it, and stay with you after the policy is issued.

Who it helps

New, teen, student, and high-risk drivers we help.

If you see yourself here, you are in the right place. None of these situations means you can’t be insured.

  • New drivers with no prior insurance or driving history
  • Teen drivers with a junior license, and their parents
  • Student drivers at Stony Brook, SCCC, Farmingdale State, and beyond
  • Students with a learner permit getting ready for the road test
  • Drivers with tickets, points, or at-fault accidents
  • Default drivers, canceled for non-payment or with a default on a past policy
  • Drivers with a lapse in insurance coverage
  • Drivers returning after a suspension who need to get back on the road legally

How it works

From “you’ve been declined” to insured.

  1. A quick conversation

Call, text, or send a quote request. We ask about your license, driving record, the vehicle, and your insurance history.

  2. We shop before we apply

We check the carriers that write new and high-risk drivers. If one of them is the better deal, we start there.

  3. Your assigned-risk application

If the plan is the right route, we prepare the application, explain the premium and payment options, and collect what is needed to submit it.

  4. Proof of insurance and next steps

Once the policy is issued, you get your New York ID cards so you can register or keep driving the car legally.

  5. Every renewal, a second look

As tickets age off and you build continuous coverage, we look for a way to move you to a better carrier.

New York requirements

What every New York auto policy has to include.

Whether your policy comes from the assigned-risk plan or a standard carrier, New York sets minimum coverage. These are the floor, not a recommendation; we’ll talk through whether higher limits make sense for you.

  • Bodily injury liability of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident, with higher minimums when an accident results in death
  • Property damage liability of at least $10,000 per accident
  • No-fault (personal injury protection) of at least $50,000
  • Uninsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident

Minimums are set by New York law and can change. Your policy documents control what is covered. Driving or keeping a registered vehicle without insurance in New York can lead to suspension of your registration and license.

Assigned risk FAQ

Common questions.

Every situation is a little different. A five-minute call usually answers more than an hour of searching.

Who qualifies for the New York assigned-risk plan?

In general, the plan is for New York drivers who have tried to get auto insurance in the regular market and could not. Eligibility depends on the plan’s rules, including your license status and the vehicle’s registration. We confirm whether you qualify before anything is submitted.

Is assigned-risk coverage “real” insurance?

Yes. You receive a policy from a licensed insurer assigned through the plan. It meets New York’s mandatory coverage requirements, and higher limits and physical damage coverage may be available.

How long do I have to stay in assigned risk?

There is no set sentence. Many drivers move back to the standard market once tickets and accidents age off their record and they show a period of continuous coverage. We review your options at each renewal.

Can I pay monthly?

Payment options depend on the insurer and the plan. Premium financing may be available for some policies. We explain the down payment and payment schedule before you commit.

What do I need to bring?

Your driver license or permit, the vehicle’s registration or title and VIN, information about anyone else who will drive the car, and your prior insurance details if you have them. We will tell you exactly what your situation requires.
