A landscaped traffic circle with green grass and young trees on an empty morning

South of the river, close to everything

Riverside sits on the south bank of the Peconic River, directly across from downtown Riverhead, but it belongs to the Town of Southampton in Suffolk County. Several county roads meet at the Riverside traffic circle, sending drivers toward Flanders, the South Fork and back over the bridge into Riverhead. Many residents cross that bridge every day for work, school and shopping.

Many of the calls we get from Riverside are about getting insured at all. A driver who just earned a license, moved here from another country or had a policy canceled often finds the usual carriers say no. That is the situation the New York Automobile Insurance Plan was built for.

We check the carriers available to us first, then place assigned-risk auto insurance through the plan when needed. The goal is a policy that lets you register the car and start building a record. We do it all by phone, text and email, and we walk through each form with you so nothing gets missed.

Who we help in Riverside

Riverside drivers we help

First-time car owners

The DMV needs New York insurance in place before it will register a car. We explain each coverage on the policy and email your ID cards once it is issued.

Drivers new to the United States

A license from another country does not come with a U.S. driving history, so many carriers treat you like a new driver. We look at which options are open to you and what each one requires.

Drivers whose policy was canceled

A cancellation for nonpayment or claims makes the next policy harder to find. We move quickly so the car is not left registered without coverage.

Local knowledge

Where the county roads come together

The traffic circle is the center of Riverside driving. Cars from the bridge, from Flanders Road and from the roads heading south through the pine woods all merge here, and it can back up at rush hour. Drivers entering the circle have to yield to traffic already in it, and fender benders happen when they do not.

Away from the circle, Riverside is mostly residential, with older homes, newer housing and wooded land toward Northampton. Students here attend Riverhead schools, so the morning school run often crosses the river too.

Questions

Riverside insurance FAQ

Do I need an SR-22 to get insured in Riverside, NY?

No. New York does not use SR-22 filings. Your insurance company reports your coverage to the DMV electronically, and the DMV tracks whether every registered car stays insured. If you moved from a state that uses SR-22, that state’s requirements on your old license may still apply there, so check before you let anything lapse.

What do I need to register a car in New York for the first time?

You need New York auto insurance in place first. The DMV asks for an insurance ID card for that vehicle from a New York insurer, along with proof of ownership, proof of identity and the fees. We email your ID cards once the policy is issued, so you have them ready for the DMV.

How does the assigned-risk plan work for drivers who were turned down?

It assigns your policy to an insurance company. When a driver cannot find coverage in the voluntary market, the New York Automobile Insurance Plan distributes the application to one of the insurers that write auto in the state, and that insurer issues the policy at plan rates. Drivers can move back to the regular market later as their record improves.
